• During the month of August, the Qualicum Beach Volunteer Fire Department kept busy, responding to 52 emergency responses from fires to automobile crashes. Meanwhile, the training division is preparing for the start of another National Fire Prevention Association class.
• Council last week passed final reading of a bylaw to exempt religious institutions from taxation. Included in the list are the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Jehovah's Witnesses, St. Mark's Anglican Church, St. Stephen's United Church, the Christian Fellowship Centre and the Qualicum Community Baptist Church.
• Tourists arriving in Qualicum Beach via train will soon be able to take advantage of a new mapping project which will show them how to get from the station to the beach and other nearby attractions within a set period of time. The project is just a part of a larger mapping initiative which will see maps made of the Heritage Forest, Community Park and other local parks in the community.
• Council passed first reading of a fireworks and firecrackers regulation bylaw at their meeting last week. The bylaw will prohibit possessing, selling, or exploding firecrackers within town limits and will limit firework sales to a period from Oct. 24 to 31.
