Report of library gunman was a hoax

By FRED DAVIES
News Reporter

September 18th, 2007

If a phone call warning of a gunman at Parksville's Civic and Technology Centre was meant as a joke, no one is laughing, least of all the RCMP. A late afternoon call was received last Thursday saying a shooter had been spotted near the library in the Jensen Avenue facility. "The payphone was used in the interior of the building. It appears to have been a prank,"said Constable Mike Elston. "A person with an accent stated there was an emergency. The suspect was described as a male with a gun and dark hair." A private security firm and police were quickly on the scene but a subsequent search of the building failed to discover anything suspicious or unusual. It's a hoax,"said Elston, noting prank calls do occur but are never appreciated and aren't usually of such a serious nature. reporter@pqbnews.com
