Parksville Lions look to build housing units for the disabled
By
FRED DAVIES
News Reporter September 18th, 2007
The Parksville Lions Housing society has a plan it hopes will dramatically increase affordable housing units for area residents with physical and mental disabilities.
"This is something we've been considering for three years, ever since we paid the mortgage on one of our properties,"said Duane Round, president of the Lions Housing Society.
"We're going to design a building, cost it out and make a proposal to the Vancouver Island Health Authority and BC Housing,"said Round of a proposal to build a four storey, 20,000-foot property in Parksville, comprised of 36, one-bedroom units with additional room for counselling and meetings.
"Because it's for mental illness and other disabilities we're hoping operation and construction funding can come from VIHA."
He said $20,000 has just been received from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. to hire an architect and other professionals able to design a building and prepare initial cost estimates.
Zoning for the planned location, near the city's downtown core, is already in place and Round said the need for more apartments provided at a lower, subsidized, cost has been clearly identified. Offices at street level are being considered as one way to offset costs for the project.
"There's no guarantee but we've got a concrete start,"he said, noting letters of support are already in from the mayor and Ron Cantelon, Liberal MLA for the region.
"We'll also be requesting forgiveness of development cost charges from the city,"said Round. "There is a section in the community charter that authorizes forgiveness on projects for affordable housing."
