Town to lower the boom on fireworks

By NEIL HORNER
News Reporter

September 21st, 2007

The sharp crack of firecrackers exploding took another step towards being a sound from the past in Qualicum Beach this week. At their first regular Wednesday meeting, council passed third reading of a bylaw to outlaw them and to severely restrict the sale and use of fireworks in the community. If adopted, the bylaw would completely ban firecrackers and Roman candles and would only allow the sale of other fireworks between Oct. 24 and 31. Commenting on the move, CAO Mark Brown said he wasn't looking for a decision on final adoption yet, as staff still needed to speak with members of the RCMP to clarify a couple of issues. Councillor Wendy Maurer agreed, noting other stakeholder groups, such as the chamber of commerce were also expected to be consulted, which had yet to happen.
